When you get engaged, one of the first things you think about is your wedding ring. You obsess over the design, the metal, and how it will look on your finger.
As if choosing the perfect ring wasn’t hard enough, now you have to figure out what to do with it during your wedding ceremony.
But, what do you do with your engagement ring during the ceremony?
Where do you put it, so it’s safe and you don’t forget it on the big day?
You don’t want to forget to actually put it back on with your wedding band after the ceremony (like I did)?
And you definitely want to make putting it back on as special as the first time, right?
Here are three surprising ways to use your engagement ring during the wedding ceremony.
1. Have it sewn into your wedding dress or wedding suit
A pocket is a great way to keep your ring safe and close to you during the ceremony.
Have a seamstress sew a small pocket into the lining of your dress or suit, or whatever you are wearing, and put your ring in there. This way, you don’t have to worry about losing it or forgetting to put it back on after the ceremony.
Plus, it can be a really cute addition to your outfit! If you’re not sure how to go about adding a pocket, ask your seamstress for help. They will know exactly what to do.
2. Give it to a special someone
If you want someone other than your spouse to have custody of your ring during the ceremony, give it to a special someone like your mum or dad or your best friend. This way, you know it will be taken care of, and you won’t have to worry about it.
This is a great solution if you want someone to keep an eye on your ring, but you don’t want to give it leave it at home or in a spot that you will "remember later". Your family or friends will be happy to help out, and you can relax knowing your ring is in good hands. Plus, they can return it to you after the ceremony.
Of course, if you have a specific person in mind, you can always give your ring to them. Just make sure they are aware of their responsibility and are willing to take on the task.
No matter who you choose to take custody of your ring, just make sure you communicate your expectations well in advance. That way, there won’t be any surprises on the big day.
3. Include the ritual during your wedding ceremony
Yup, I saved the best for last. After you exchange your wedding rings, ask your celebrant to read the following verse, and you can put the ring back on during the ceremony.
“As wedding rings are symbols of marriage, the engagement ring is a symbol of promise and intention. Now the intention is realised, and the promise is fulfilled. Name, please place the engagement ring on Name’s finger over their wedding band to symbolise that the love that has brought you together will always protect and sustain your marriage.”
Make sure to take your time putting your engagement ring back on during the wedding ceremony. Take a quiet moment to reflect on your journey from that first moment to your wedding day. It should be a special moment that is just as memorable as the first time you put it on.
So, if you’re looking for a creative way to use your engagement ring during the wedding ceremony, try one of these three ideas. They all have one thing in common – they keep your ring close to you and safe during the ceremony. So relax and enjoy your day – you won’t have to worry about your ring!
And please, please, please, don’t be like me and forget to actually put the engagement ring back on your finger :P I look at my photos and laugh now, but for years, I did cry a wee little bit.
